Alan Caplan

Alan Caplan is a strategic advisor to Coopersmith Law + Strategy for new technologies, emerging markets, and rapidly scaling businesses focused on energy and the environment.

Alan served as the first General Counsel for Amazon.com, where he was responsible for the initial development of Amazon’s legal policy, priorities, and processes. Alan supervised the company’s initial public offering and its $1.5B of follow-on financing and acquisitions. Later, he pivoted to the business side of the company, becoming Vice President and General Manager of Amazon’s Kitchen, Payments, and Corporate Development groups.

Caplan went on to become the first non-technical employee for Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ spaceflight company, where he supported and counseled a growing team of scientists and engineers. He oversaw business development, legal and regulatory affairs, and organizational effectiveness.

Most recently, Caplan served as Senior Director of Incubation and Innovation at Vulcan Inc., a science, humanitarian, and business organization created by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Caplan was responsible for business strategy and development, as well as program management for initiatives involving ocean health, UAVs, wildlife protection, immersive reality, and blockchain payments. Caplan holds a BBA in Finance from the University of Michigan and a JD from the University of Chicago Law School.
